If you have a sudden impulse to bleach your hair, please do not rush to the local drugstore and purchase Jerome Russel. From my past experience this bleach has lifted my dark hair to an orange colour and didn’t lift to a blonde shade considering the damage it caused. Instead, try to purchase professional bleach so your hair does not get as damage as it would if you were to use drugstore bleach and it would avoid hairdressers from giving us the eye roll. Back in May during the lockdown period, my worst fear arose... my roots had grown out! So, I decided to take it into my own hands and attempt to balayage my own hair.
What I used to bleach my hair
After having done some research, I decided to purchase Schwarzkopf Blonde Me bleach powder and developer. You may recognise Schwarzkopf hair dye from the drug store but the Blonde Me is part of their professional collection. Their Blonde Me collection is designed specifically to achieve the best blonde hair. The brand claims Blonde Me has an advanced bonding system which reduces breakage during bleaching. It also has 9 levels of lift which would allow even the darkest hair to lift to a light blonde. The lightening is a clay based powder which lifts 7 levels even though the brand claims to lift 9 levels (confusing). It even claims to spread evenly and have precision. Moreover, I used a 30 volume developer as I was lightening my dark roots. If you have dark, damaged or pre-bleached hair use 20 volume. I used Schwarzkopf Igora 20 volume on the ends of my hair as I had this from a previous purchase.
How to use Schwarzkopf Blonde Me
Mix 1:2 ratio of the clay powder with the developer. Mix thoroughly until all the lumps have gone. The consistency should not be too thick or thin, as long as it’s thick enough to saturate the hair strands fully. Section the hair and apply a foil strip underneath the desired hair you want to lighten. Apply the bleach then fold the foil upwards so the section sits tight inside the foil. It’s so important to use foils during lightening as the heat would allow the chemical reaction to process quicker and to its upmost in order to achieve a high lift. If you’re bleaching your whole head please do not lather the bleach as I have seen this mistake in many YouTube videos. Remember bleach does not lather... it is not shampoo! Just make sure you fully saturate the sections of your hair. The more bleach the better. Do not be afraid to put loads on. Remember to use a toner to get the desired hair shade once you have rinsed out the bleach.
Pros:
The bleach lifted my level 2 roots to a level 8/9 blonde.
The bleach mixes perfectly and is easy to use.
Surprisingly, my hair felt soft after the bleaching process which has never happened when I have used drugstore bleach. This makes Blonde Me great for those who are trying to achieve a platinum blonde and have previously bleached their hair.
The consistency of the bleach was perfect and there were no uneven patches in my hair. The thickness allowed for a precise application which is great for those who are highlighting or balayaging their hair.
There was enough powder and developer to balayage my long, thick hair. I even have loads of developer left over.
There was only a little bit of breakage which proves that the advanced bonding system does really work. This is such a good bonus as it’s been difficult to get a haircut. Also, I’m trying to preserve the length of my hair so this bleach is perfect.
The bleach processes rapidly so you don’t have to sit and wait all day but you must work fast.
Cons:
The scent of the bleach can be overpowering. Due to the balayage process being lengthy, my eyes started to water and turn red as if I had come back from a funeral.
Kritique Rating: 4.8/5.
