This question seems to ponder on everyone's mind when it comes to the Dyson Airwrap. At such an expensive cost, it's no wonder people contemplate whether to purchase it or not. In today's blog I will be discussing my experience with the Airwrap to help you lovely people who may be thinking of purchasing it, whether it is worth it or not.

Why is the Dyson Airwrap perfect for me?

For someone who dries and curls their hair 24/7, the Airwrap is way more convenient. Sometimes I couldn't be bothered to wash my hair purely because it was time consuming so, I just used to count on my dry shampoo. The Airwrap cuts this time in half. It dries and curls my hair at the same time which is quicker and easier. On my last holiday I was annoyed at how long it took to do my hair and I wasn't happy with it in many of my holiday photos because some days I just gave up doing it. I'm super excited to take the Dyson Airwrap on holiday with me next time (whenever that will be.) My hair also takes the piss to dry so regardless I always have to blow dry it.

FAQ

For this next part of the blog I decided to Google frequently asked questions to see if I can answer them from my experience with the Airwrap which will hopefully answer many of your queries.

Can I use the Dyson Airwrap on dry hair?

The answer is yes. Even though the whole purpose of the Airwrap is to dry your hair, when my curls fall a bit flat the next day, I just pick up dry pieces and curl my hair. On Elle.com it suggests to not use it on dry hair and to spritz water pre-hand but I don't think this is necessary at all. I think the curls actually come out better.

Do The curls last?

It depends on which barrel you use. However, you can always use a bit of hairspray which would help the longevity. If I use the 20mm or the 30mm, their is still a curl the next day but not as tight. Still looks beautiful though.

Does it work on short hair?

Yes, most definitely! The Dyson would work on any length hair. They also sell other attachments so if you have finer hair I would suggest getting the thinner barrels and if you have long hair you can get the longer barrels for the same price. If you have long hair just under your waist than you can get away with using the normal styler but it may be quicker to get the one with longer barrels.

Why are there two barrels for each size?

The reason why there are two barrels for each size is because one barrel curls the hair to the left and one curls it to the right. You always want to curl away from the face so choose the appropriate barrel for each side of your head. You want the arrows to face away from your face. Or you can do your hair however you want, there are no rules.

Does the drying attachment replace the normal Dyson Hairdryer?

Yes and no. The drying attachments purpose in the kit is to get your hair to dry to a damp stage rather than fully dry because, before you can use the curling barrels your hair must be damp. If it is soaking wet then the Airwrap can't produce curls. However, you could use it to fully dry your hair but it would be a bit more time consuming than if you were to use the normal Dyson Hairdryer.

What you get in the complete set

In the complete set you get:

  • A round volume brush. This just adds volume to the root and a curl at the end.

  • 40mm barrels for waves.

  • 30mm barrels for curls.

  • Soft smoothing brush to achieve silky straight hair.

  • Smooth and straight firm brush tool for course or curly hair in order to produce straight hair.

  • A pre-styling dryer to use to dry the hair damp before using the curling barrels.

  • A beautiful and luxury, brown leather storage case and a non-slip mat.

  • A filter cleaning brush that needs to be used to brush the filter every so often to keep up with the maintenance of the Airwrap. The light on the Airwrap will flash when it needs to be cleaned.

How I use it to curl hair

1. Once I have towel dried my hair I section my hair into two and spray heat protectant. I then use any of the smoothing brushes to brush through and dry my hair on the highest heat. Don't be afraid to use the highest heat as it is still not as damaging to the hair in comparison to using a normal styling tool. I sometimes use the pre-styling dryer but I had to brush my hair whilst drying it which there was no point as I can just use one of the Airwrap's brushes and it does a perfect job.

2. After my hair is damp, I then use any barrel I desire to curl my hair with. I use the arrows pointing away from my face on the appropriate side. I grab a small section of my hair (about an inch or less) and introduce the bottom of the hair to the barrel. The rest of the hair then automatically attaches itself to the Airwrap. I leave it to dry for 10 seconds (sometimes 8 if I'm in a rush.)

3. I just discovered that I'm so stupid. Whilst writing this blog I realised something. As I was Googling the faqs, on the Dyson Airwrap it says there are 4 heat settings (and three speed settings, I always use the highest.) I thought there were only three but, after having fully observed my Airwrap, keeping in mind I've had this for nearly a month, I've just discovered there are four. So, to lock the curl in place you should always use a cold heat setting for an additional 5-10 seconds after using the high heat. I have been using the cold heat setting button to set the curl in place however, to give your hair a cold shot, this whole time I could have just held the on button all the way up which gives it the cold shot rather than faffing around with the heat settings. I did think was a bit weird as it's quite a hassle and sometimes I would accidentally reduce the speed setting rather than the heat setting because everything is the wrong way around when you look in the mirror. I guess we both have learnt something here.

4. I then switch off the Airwrap before releasing the hair. If you don't switch it off before releasing the curl it can fly all over the place and you may lose that definition of the curl. Then repeat for the whole head.

I have used the 30mm and the 40mm barrels. They both create beautiful curls and waves. I purchased the 20mm barrels separate as sometimes I prefer tighter curls. I love how I have an option to what curl I can create. You will able to see the outcome of these curls in the Instagram Reels on my Kritique With Kim Insta page. As for the straightening brush attachments, I haven't used them to their full potential however, I have used them to dry my hair to a damp stage. Although they wouldn't give your hair the same pin straight hair as a straightener would, it would straighten your hair but with added fullness and volume to it. As for the volume brush, I have used it on the front pieces for my hair and it is just like using a hairdryer and bristle brush but in one device.

So, let's go back to the question of, is the Dyson Airwrap worth it? I definitely think so. I feel like my hair can always look glam even when the curls drop out the next day but you can always go in and touch it up or simply use some hairspray. Also, it has really cut down styling time which was the biggest pro for me. Drying my hair then curling the whole head was a headache but my natural hair is so shit, it's not wavy nor is it straight. Looks like a frizz ball. However, with the Dyson Airwrap, my hair looks fabulous! Let me know if this blog has swayed your decision!

This blog is dedicated to my beautiful partner who knew this was on my wish list for a while.
