YouTubers and TikTokers have been raving about the affordable Garnier Ultimate Blends Hair Food mask. After having seen this mask across social media, I decided to take matters into my own hands and review the mask for myself and give you guys an honest kritique you deserve.

Background Information About My Hair

At the time of this blog my hair was long, thick, super dry and damaged. For the past three years I have been getting it professionally bleached so you can imagine how damaged my hair is. For this reason I chose the Repairing Papaya and Amla mask as it is designed for damaged hair.

How I Used The Mask

The mask claims to be a 3 in 1. It can be used as your normal conditioner, a mask or a leave in conditioner. In the shower I decided to leave the mask in my hair for over 3 minutes as instructed on the pot. I applied roughly three table spoons to make sure the whole of my hair was saturated besides the roots. I used a wide tooth comb to comb the product through the hair making sure all strands were covered then I rinsed the mask out. I didn't use conditioner because I wanted to test the full effect of the mask. After my shower I towel dried my hair. Off topic but how many of you know how to towel dry your hair? I have witnessed people rubbing their hair together with a towel and I have been scarred. If you towel dry your hair like this it will cause so much damage, breakage and frizz. Please use the towel to squeeze the hair strands working your way from your roots down in order to get rid of excess water. Always treat your hair as if it were strands of gold. Anyway, I then applied a teaspoon of the mask to the ends of my hair. I didn't apply too much as I was afraid that it would make my hair look greasy.

Pros

  • The mask is 98% made with natural ingredients, vegan and 96% biodegradable which is great for our beautiful planet.

  • The smell of the mask is bearable and not overpowering but I wouldn't say it is super nice nonetheless, that is down to personal preference.

  • It did not leave the hair looking greasy or feeling sticky especially after having applied it to wet hair after the shower.

  • My hair does look shinier than previously.

  • My hair was easier to brush out whilst I was hair drying it.

Cons

  • The mask claims to reduce the look of split ends by 50% but my ends still look the same.

  • My hair felt rough prior to towel drying even though I combed my hair in the shower which usually makes my hair feel silky.

  • For bleached or damaged hair, I prefer the Elvive Full restore 5 Masque which leaves hair feeling super silky even though it contains more chemicals and may not include natural ingredients like the Garnier mask.

  • My hair still feels the same as if I were to use a normal conditioner and I have had better experiences with other hair masks.

  • I don't know if anyone else with bleached hair gets knotted hair at the nape of the neck but this is where I concentrated the product in order to untangle the hair. My hair is still tangled and the mask did not help with this problem.

After Mask Application

I can see why people with non-bleached hair may love this mask as it would probably enhance the hair's natural shine. Personally, I wouldn't waste time using this if you have coloured or bleached hair as I would rather just slap on a good conditioner. If I were to use this mask again I would use it coincide a conditioner in order to produce a stronger effect. For me the mask didn't do much but I may be quick to judge. It could be possible I may have picked the worst out of the collection or I need to use it multiple times to see a difference however, I have used other masks that have impressed me immediately. I'm sorry but I just don't understand the rave surrounding this mask which is so unfortunate as I had such high expectations. Let me know if you have used the Garnier Food Mask before and your experience with it on my Instagram page!
